How to Do a New Moon Ritual: A Nordic Guide to Setting Intentions

3 min read

There is a particular kind of stillness that arrives with the new moon.

The sky darkens, the light retreats, and something ancient inside you stirs — a quiet invitation to begin again. In Nordic tradition, this darkness was never feared. It was honored as a threshold, a sacred pause between what was and what is becoming.

If you have ever felt the pull of the lunar cycle but didn't know where to start, this guide is for you.

What Is a New Moon Ritual?

A new moon ritual is a simple, intentional practice done during the darkest phase of the lunar cycle — when the moon is invisible in the night sky. This is the moment of planting seeds, not yet visible, but quietly taking root.

Unlike the full moon, which calls us to release and let go, the new moon asks: What do I want to call in?

It is a moment for clarity. For vision. For sitting with the quiet question of what your soul is reaching toward.

Why the New Moon Is Powerful for Intention Setting

Every lunar cycle lasts approximately 29.5 days. The new moon marks its beginning — a natural reset that our ancestors aligned their lives with long before calendars existed.

In Scandinavian folk tradition, the new moon was connected to new beginnings, planting, and inner reflection. The Norse concept of seiðr — the magic of shaping what is to come — was often practiced during liminal moments like this one.

Modern research on habit formation also supports this: beginning new practices at natural cycle points increases follow-through. The new moon is one of the most powerful of these thresholds.

A Simple New Moon Ritual: Step by Step

You don't need elaborate tools or hours of time. What you need is intention and a willingness to be honest with yourself.

1. Create Your Sacred SpaceFind a quiet corner. Light a candle — preferably white or deep blue. Burn a little dried lavender, pine, or mugwort if you have it. These are plants deeply connected to Nordic ritual and lunar energy.

Sit comfortably. Take three slow breaths.

2. Ground Yourself in the PresentBefore setting intentions, it helps to arrive fully in the moment. Ask yourself:

  • How am I feeling right now, honestly?

  • What am I carrying from the last lunar cycle?

  • What is ready to be left behind?

Write your answers freely, without editing yourself.

3. Set Your New Moon IntentionsThis is the heart of the ritual. Intentions are not goals with deadlines — they are directions. They describe not just what you want, but who you are becoming.

Write 3–5 intentions beginning with "I am..." or "I welcome..."

Examples:

  • I am open to new opportunities in my work

  • I welcome deeper rest and stillness

  • I am becoming someone who trusts her own wisdom

4. Connect with Nordic Botanicals

If you want to deepen your ritual, certain plants carry strong lunar correspondences in Nordic tradition:

  • Mugwort — for dreams, intuition, and lunar connection

  • Pine — for grounding, clarity, and northern forest energy

  • Elderflower — for new beginnings and protection

  • Yarrow — for boundary-setting and self-trust

Place a small bundle near your candle, or brew a simple tea to drink during your ritual.

5. Close with GratitudeEnd your ritual by thanking the darkness — the space that holds your seeds before they grow. Write one sentence of gratitude for something from the past cycle, however small.

Then blow out your candle and release your intentions to the night.

Make Your New Moon Ritual a Monthly Practice

The most powerful rituals are the ones you return to. Each month, as the new moon returns, you have a fresh threshold to step through.

To support your practice, we created the New Moon Ritual Journal PDF — a 20-page Nordic celestial guide designed to walk you through each step of your ritual with beautiful prompts, lunar trackers, affirmations, and botanical correspondences.

The Moon Does Not Ask You to Be Perfect

It only asks you to show up.

Month after month, the new moon returns — patient, faithful, constant. And each time it does, it offers you the same gentle invitation: begin again.

You don't need to have everything figured out. You don't need to feel ready. You only need to light a candle, pick up a pen, and be willing to dream.
